The "scribble" example in the tutorial may help, and the Xlib
Programming Manual (vol 1) is good if you want tons of details.

Suggest simply:
gtk_widget_get_colormap (widget)
> cred.red =1.0;
These values are in the range [0,G_MAXUSHORT]
