didn't I point you to GTK+ for DirectFB already?
If you need to upgrade your kernel depends on your gfx card and if you
want to make use of hardware-acceleration. GTK+ FB does not offer
hardware acceleration and thus should work with vesafb from Linux-2.2.
I suggest you read the documents in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/.
