pygtk install problems

I'm trying to install PyGTK. I ./configure alright, but on the make, it
stops with an error and complains that it can't find
/usr/local/lib/libglade.so, which is already installed and in the right
place for a long time now.  why won't PyGTK see that libglade is installed?
 how can i get over this problem?
