I found the most reliable way to detect end-of-select was to listen for
hide on the popup pane of the combo:
popwin = GTK_COMBO (combo)->popwin;
gtk_signal_connect (GTK_OBJECT (popwin), "hide",
GTK_SIGNAL_FUNC (myfunc),
(gpointer) data);
this way you get keyboard navigation too.
Of course, you're not supposed to look at the popwin member :-(
