as an avid user of GtkCanvas, i would encourage you to move to GTK+2, and then use GnomeCanvas from GNOME 2. In this release of GNOME, the Canvas has *no* GNOME-related dependencies other than those shared by GTK+ (glib, ATK, Pango). You can use it in its own library without any of the rest of GNOME. The only thing you have to put up with is the "Gnome" prefix to the name.
