gtkdrawingarea mouse signals

Hi everyone,
I am new to this list and to gtk so please be patient with me.
My code contains a gtk window that contains a gtkdrawing area.I know how to draw on that area. But if I want to select a certain area within this "drawing area" to apply a certain action on it. How do I do that. I mean which event should the drawing area receive and how to get the coordinates of the choosen area (it should be rectangular).
