You can overwrite a system installation by configuring with
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc. 

But, yes, you can just use the GLib.. etc packages from Rawhide;
they'll work fine with Red Hat 9. though it may take them a few days 
to  show up on mirrors.
