Hi Normally "render" and "xft" are included in the XFree distribution. I'm not sure but I think you need at least XFree / Xorg >= 4.3.
So look for an X update, which should solve your problems (at least when you use Gtk+ on Linux). And remember to install the corresponding development packages.
