Let me guess - you removed the GTK1 libraries when you upgraded, and that
broke gdm which was still using tho GTK1 libraries.

You can install GTK1 and GTK2 on the system - they use different filenames
and directory names, so they don't conflict with each other.

rpm -Uvh   the gtk1 and glib1 RPMs back onto your system and gdm should start 
working.
