The Gtk+ tutorial does contain an example http://www.gtk.org/tutorial/ch-buttonwidget.html (In Gtk+2.6, there's a new way, but I'd use the old method for compatibility.) And you can read the part about widget packing too: button is a container, so images can be packed to it the same way as to other containers.
