I am compiling GTK+ 2.10. The dependencies link ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v2.10/dependencies (listed on the downloads page http://www.gtk.org/download/) lists cairo-1.2.0.tar.gz as the needed library.
After several attempts to make it work, I found that the latest version of cairo, cairo-1.2.4.tar.gz , works a lot better. You may want to update ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v2.10/dependencies .
