In between, I've tried to compile cairo-1.2.4. It worked. So, I've copied configure file from tree 1.2.4 to tree 1.2.8. After this change I was able to compile cairo-.1.2.8 . I am sure that this is NOT the correct solution... but... hey ... it works.
