Here are a few options. I'm sure there are more:

   - Use a DrawingArea and draw everything on your own in the expose
   callback.
   - Use a canvas widget, e.g. GooCanvas.
   - SubClass a GtkWidget and draw everything in the expose signal.
   - Pack everything normally without the icon, and then use the expose
   callback to draw the icon
