You can also use gtk_notebook_set_tab_pos to set them to GTK_POS_LEFT or RIGHT. You might have to combine that with Jorge's answer to get the vertical tabs you mights be looking for.
Please also note that such tabs are not recommanded in easy to use useri interfaces. Pierre-Luc
