I'm not sure why you cannot find it, by all my machines have at least libglib-2.0.so, libgtk-x11-2.0.so, libgobject-2.0.so ... Are you sure glib shared object is not present? As for optional GTK+ support, wouldn't be better to check for GTK+ at configure phase and compile/link your application accordingly?
