Hi. GTK+-2.18 introduced client-side windows, which means that not all GdkWindows are now backed with native window. The only GdkWindow that is always backed by native window is applicaition's toplevel window.
This probably explains why your drawing would end-up on the toplevel. It is possible to set GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS env variable, in which case all GdkWindows will be native windows like in GTK+>2.18.
