This is a mea culpa, and a warning about the risks of answering email
at 1am when you're already feeling dog tired.
although the solution i described for threads and GTK was accurately
described, and works fine, what I wrote about fork(2) is COMPLETELY
AND UTTERLY INCORRECT. i have been a unix systems programmer for 13
years, and i have no idea how or why i wrote what i did, but its
TOTALLY WRONG.
i apologize for both the misleading information, and for the
suggestion to the original poster that s/he didn't understand
fork(2). i am very sorry.
