It seems to be important to figure out what causes this autoconf bug, as it may affect other projects using.
Otherwise the Gtk2hs tgz distribution works. As for MacPorts, as mentioned before, its Gth2Hs insists on taking down a old GHC which takes very long time to install. So that is only an option if one is not interested in the libraries added to later GHC.
