It depends on the render ordering and making sure the widget is configured properly at the right place.
You should assume that most OpenGL drivers aren't thread-aware, which is why one has to be careful on the ordering sequence of GL-related commands. Also, if you are using a (non-timer) thread that isn't managed by GTK to render, you should lock it or make GTK aware that you are going to fiddle with parameters using 'gdk_threads_enter ()' etc to signal you are sending commands outside GDK.
