This is extremely surprising given (a) you are using a 2005 version of 
Mandrake and (b) the NPTL headers are installed.

Does Mandrake do something odd like have two versions of glibc included in the 
distribution?

What does the Mandrake documentation say about using NPTL - the headers must 
be there for something?  I trust you didn't check the glibc version with the 
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL environmental variable set?
