You haven't done a "jhbuild bootstrap" by any chance? Don't.

I use jhbuild boostrap all the time and find that several things break if I
don't. Please don't just handwave some random thing. Comment #10 is relevant.
The file should be at, for instance,
/opt/gnome228/share/aclocal/glibmm_check_perl.m4

I'm not hand-waving. If you do a jhbuild bootstrap without subsequently
building glibmm within your jhbuild as well, it is quite likely that it will
break because the aclocal installed by jhbuild knows zilch about your system's
aclocal.

jhbuild boostrap is typically done right after a jhbuild installation, not
after building glibmm.

Sure. What I mean is that you probably cannot use the system glibmm in that
case, at least not without setting the aclocal include path explicitly. That's
why I asked whether glibmm was built using jhbuild as well. Unfortunately we
haven't got an answer to that question yet.

I don't think anyone is trying to use the system glibmm, so I don't see how
this is relevant. If they are building gtkmm in jhbuild then they presumably
built all its dependencies in gtkmm too.
Since this bug was filed, I've built gtkmm in jhbuild in new Ubuntu Jaunty
installs on new PCs. If I can't reproduce it then we need some more clues, such
as whether the file is there, what's in it, and what the environment variables
are.
Note that this bug is about _gtkmm_ not building, but comment #13 mentinos
_glibmm_ not building, which is not at all the same thing. glibmm has the m4
macro in its scripts directory and installs it for gtkmm to use later.

I completely agree that we need more clues and changed the status to NEEDINFO
for that reason.
