That is not true. Not true at all!

GTKmm is a wrapper for GTK. GTK "normally" uses X as the back-end, but
doesn't absolutely have to. I develop GTKmm applications on machines
where Gnome has never been allowed to set foot. Gnome is utterly
irrelevant and beside the point.
