Is this the actual unmodified example from the book?  The example runs fine
on my ubuntu 12.04 system (which also has gtkmm-3.0).  Maybe you modified
it in some way?  The errors/warnings suggest that gtkmm has not been
initialized, but that should not be happening with the example.  By the
way, what version of gtkmm-3.0 does `pkg-config --modeversion gktmm-3.0'
report your on system?
