I should have looked at this message sooner.

You meant up and down movement. I found a piece to be extremely worn
when I changed it back in 95.  It is a linkage bolt/bearing that can only
be examined by removing the stupid Center stand. Your next problem, 
of course, becomes suspending the bike without a center stand! Duh,
yamaha!

        This thing was "maintenance free", but clearly had no dust
protection and wore out badly. It gave me lots of up and down play,
but not a full 2 inches. Anyway, it's probably one of a couple culprits.

        I fixed mine by suspending the gts by straps from the rear
handles to the roof of the garage. Use heavy straps!
        You'll need another strap on the handlebar stem! If you don't
the bike will try to rotate until the handlebars are below the bike. While
interesting to watch, I don't recommend it for maintenance reasons-
new fairing pieces, mirrors, etc., will be necessary after such a move.
