There is a cam-chain that drives the cam shafts off of the crank shaft. It
would not be surprising to find that the cam chain tensioner (located
below the throttle bodies between cylinders 2 and 3, was failing or worn
out and failing to keep the chain tight. Also the chain could have worn
beyond its service limit. It is possible to change a cam chain by just
removing the head, but it can be a tough job.

A cam chain sounds like a 'nuts in a coffee can' rattle when you cut the
throttle.
