It depends on several factors. I usually remove all the plastic and trailer
the bike to him. Saves about 1 hr. labor. Another factor is how many shims
have to be replaced. Because the cams have to be removed, it isn't cheap!
The two times I've had it done it cost $300-$350. I really don't mind pay
this guy because I know he's as anal about my bikes as I am. He's a
hopeless perfectionist who works at a local dealer. He's also a friend and
I don't mind helping his cashflow in the winter.

I just got mine back from a valve adjustment too! My odo is reading
62,000 mi. and it's been almost 40K since my last one! Everything is fine
with about eight shims needing replacing. I did a compression test too and
everything was strong. I don't have the sheet in front of me right now, so
I can't give you exact numbers. The trick seems to be getting the GTS in
before 20,000 mi. for it's first adjustment. Do NOT wait until 26,000 mi.!
After the first adjustment, the valves pretty much stay dead on for 26K
plus! My mechanic said that the top end of the engine was pristine and with
the strong compression and reasonable shim stacks under the valves the
engine should be good for 150K plus before rebuild.
While the wife and baby were away this weekend I also broke out the
feeler gauge and carb sticks to adjust the valves and balance the carbs on
my ZRX1100. I love a bike that I can work on myself. After just 3300 miles,
11 out of 16 valves needed adjusting with new shims!! Thanks to the ZRX
mail list, I knew that I shouldn't wait until the 7500 mi. interval.
Oh yeah, I also created K&N filters for my GTS using the old frames and
(1) K&N filter for an FZ750. Very nice!!

Someone was asking not long ago whether they required a valve adjustment.
Well here is some info that might help you decide. My GTS has 31 000km. No
important service has been done to this machine. Just oil\filterchanges at
too long intervals. The spark plugs were changed just before I picked her
up in NOV 2000.(I really don't know why the previous owner even did this).
Well I just did a compression test. I don't want anyone to get surprised or
shocked over the results, because I have seen worse. #1=180psi #2=30psi
#3=80psi #4=90psi.This what happens when things are neglected & taken for
