At Last !......The Uni-Filter Project has been completed.
The cutting of the Uni - filter part # NU-4089 is the hard part because of
the steel grating that separates the black and green foam material. What I
did was to take
1 1/2 inch wide masking tape and wrap it around the center of the filter .
The center was determined by measuring the length (6 1/2 ") dividing it in
half (3 1/4 ") marking the half on all four cutting locations. Then mark 3/4
inch on BOTH sides of your center line (s) . Place the masking tape (1 1/2 "
wide) around the filter at the center (using the 3/4" marks as a guide for
the outer edge).
Find a suitable blocking device, a vise or a black& decker workmate table
like I did to hold the uni in place while you start cutting . Take your time!
"Score" the cut lines of the filter and carefully saw through the the
filter edges (rubber on one side plastic on the other ) Place some masking
tape sticky side up inside the filter to collect cutting dust. When the
cutting is complete you should have a 1-1/2 " center cut piece of uni-filter
and two half moons that will be your new reusable foam filters.
Remove the molded indentations on the "solid" side of the uni (hold the
filter up and you'll see what I'm talking about).
Prepare your stock filter housing by carefully removing the stock paper
filter element and scraping the old glue out ( I used an exacto- knife with a
flat scraping blade). The sealing adhesive product you use is up to you . I
used automotive GOOP for sealing the filter and allowing the "GOOP" to cure
for three days. Looking inside the filter you will see some "spaces" along
the inner sides. I used some Blue RTV to fill these small "voids". Use tape
or rubber bands to secure the filter to the stock housing(s). After you are
satisfied that the filter is "sealed" to the stock housings apply the uni -
filter oil to your new filters.
Thanks to Kevin Hawkins & Bob Taylor for the info . You can get a
UNI-Foam Filter from J.C. Whitney for a GL-1200 for $18.99 (its a NU-4089)
GOOP can be bought at any wal-mart.
