thanks for several good ideas in posted replies, and in particular to mark,
who gave me this insight off-list:  "How vigorously were you pumping. I've
got speedbleeders, and I find that if I
pump the pedal very vigorously, I'll see a lot of very tiny bubbles. I think
these are being caused by turbulence, and that they are not existing air in
the
system. If I pump slowly, when I first start bleeding the rear brake, I see
a
number of "medium" sized bubbles. After about 1/2 pint of fluid, they
disappear, and the pedal feel gets better. Even at that point, pumping
_hard_
will produce bubbles."

proceding today at MUCH slower and more even pace cleaned out all bubbles
and got totally clear flow and return of very good, very solid pedal feel.

throttle cable adjustment went well and easily, with particular care taken
to allow for even revs at full steering lock.
