Ok here's my cure for hunting , surging , etc
see if you agree.
When i first had my bike it would surge from just off tick over to 3000rpm
when cold .
When it had warmed up , it was slightly better but not much.
So this is what i did .
First i set the throttle body screws all two turns out from fully screwed
in.
Then i removed the air box and connected up a set of balance gauges , then
warmed up the bike to normal operating temperature , then balanced the
throttle flaps using the flap adjuster screws ( as you would on a set of
carbs ) .
I know the manual says not to use these adjusters , but why not ?
The throttle body screws only seem to affect the balance setting at tick
over , but i feel its more important for the FLAPS to be balanced because
they affect the whole rev range.
Next i set up the mixture to each cylinder by doing the following.
Remove seat , on top of the battery is the ECU unit , remove the rubber
cover , on the side of the ECU next to the block connectors is 4 holes ,
these give you access to the mixture adjusters for each cylinder ( cylinder
No1 should be nearest block connector ).
Now remove lower cowling to gain access to exhaust , underneath the down
pipes is 4 cap screws remove No1 cylinder screw and connect gas analyser ,
now start the already warm engine , read analyser ( it should read
approx 2% CO ) if not adjust mixture screw on ECU for that cylinder small
amounts at a time and recheck analyser until reading 2% CO , do this for all
cylinders.
Then recheck / reset the throttle flap balance.
I know some listers have set their pots to the 1 o'clock
position , but i feel this is masking the effect of surging .
One pot set at the 1 o'clock position could be giving a mixture of 6% CO (
Rich ) and another set at the same 1 o'clock position could be reading 1% CO
( Lean ) .
The bike would seem to run OK , but it could run a lot better.
OK so am i right , wrong , or have i got some bits right and some wrong.
If wrong , explain your reasons PLEASE.
I await your judgement .
