Robert,
I have had an older, dual mode cell phone (analog and digital) with
Verizon (formerly GTE) Wireless service with the Nationwide, no roaming,
no long distance plan.
I traveled regularly on my job to Phoenix, Col and Or.
I have been on many rally's covering all the western states including
the NW Passage which went into Canada. Most recently I did the Waltz
Across Texas rally, wherein I covered ~5,000 mi in 8 days thru CA, Az,
NM, Tx, Ar, Ok and La.
My cell phone has always worked (at least where there is cell coverage).
On the Tx rally I had a "loaner" GlobalStar satellite/cell phone, but
only used it once. It is big, expensive and no earphone jack.
The key is to have a dual mode (analog/ digital) phone. There are fewer
and fewer spots where there is no cell coverage.
I recently added a "CellSet" that plugs in line with my CB headset cord
and uses the earphone jack, which allows me to talk on my cell phone
right thru my helmet headset.
It was enjoyable coming back from Tx talking to friends and wife who
would call to check on me daily as most of the roads out there are
boooooooring!!!
