A "pom" is a slang term for an Englishman (I'm actually English even though
I've lived in Oz for many years).  The origin is thought to be an
abbreviation of "Prisoner Of Mother England" (POME), from when convicts were
sent to Australia in early 19th Century.  Normally friendly, pom or pommy,
but not so much so when he's referred to as a pommy bastard!!
