I know people have played with these settings before. Is there a prefered
setting to use, or a way to set it without an exhaust gas analyzer ?

They change the mixture settings for each cylinder.
To set them .
Remove seat , on top of the battery is the ECU unit , remove the rubber
cover , on the side of the ECU next to the block connectors is 4 holes ,
these give you access to the mixture adjusters for each cylinder ( cylinder
No1 should be nearest block connector ).
Now remove lower cowling to gain access to exhaust , underneath the down
pipes is 4 cap screws remove No1 cylinder screw and connect gas analyser ,
now start the already warm engine , read analyser ( it should read approx 2%
CO ) if not adjust mixture screw on ECU for that cylinder small amounts at a
time and recheck analyser until reading 2% CO , do this for all cylinders.
