The length of the drive shaft is irrelevant. The tolerance between the gears
is what creates drive line slop. There is usually a cush drive somewhere in
the final drive line that is supposed to smooth the transition from decel to
accel too. It is also possible these systems and their deemed necessary
effectiveness differ between European manufacturers and Japanese
manufacturers. Based solely on your observations of your two shaft drive
motorcycles, it would appear the Japanese use a tighter spec for gear
backlash than the Germans. However, as it has been alluded to, it could also
be a perception situation. Not everyone notices every nuance. Similarly, some
people are more sensitive to certain nuances. Where one thing would drive one
person crazy, another would not notice it until pointed out to him. This is
also a possible explanation.
