Subject: Gas Cap HELP!!!
Fellow GTSer's:
I can't believe that I have to post this on the list ... but I need some
help. I can't get my #&$^%* gas cap off ... so my bike is unrideable. (Let
a close friend borrow it a few weeks ago ... and I suspect he twisted the
s**t out of the cap trying to get it off before he noticed that it simple
takes a key to remove. *Sigh*) Anyway, the gas cap has never been a
problem to remove ... until now. In trying to get the cap off, I've jacked
around with the s.o.b. for hours.
Exasperated, I removed all of the body panels as well as the large fuel pump
assembly on the left side of the tank (as you sit on the bike). So, I have
limited access from inside the tank. I suspect that the problem is that
the outer part of the gas cap is not lining up with the inner part of the
gas cap (the part the key goes into). So, when I twist the outer part of
the cap, the inner key part will move along with it to a certain point, then
the inner key part stops moving (while the outer part continues to rotate).
I can line up (or orientate) the top or outer part of the gas cap easily
enough. It's the inner key part that I suspect is the problem.
Would someone please remove their gas cap for me and tell me where the outer
notch is supposed to be in relation to the gas tank? I.e., as I look at the
bottom of the gas cap (with a flash light from inside the tank), I can see
that its round, but it has an round sort of "inner notch" as well as a
square sort of "outer notch." I'm guessing that the square outer notch is
supposed to be position toward the front of the bike (i.e., the 12 o'clock
position). Can some please verify that? (I have not be able to get the
square outer notch to move to the 12 o'clock position ... only to about 2
o'clock or 10 o'clock ... but if I knew that it had to be in the 12 o'clock
position, I would just try to force it up there somehow.)
Finally, I have been able to get the cap off about half way (with the key
inserted, and the two little prong things that retract when the key is
turned ... which are in the 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock positions). And when I
do this, I can see that the little prong things do, in fact, retract when I
turn the key (which is why I can't figure out what the **** is preventing
the cap from coming off).
I'm ready to take a sawsall and cut the *$&@&#$# cap off (and I would have
done so had I not feared getting metal chips inside the tank). Before I do
that, I wanted to see if someone on the list has any ideas or thoughts.
Thanks for any advice (and sorry to burden the list about a gas cap
question!)
