Last night, I installed the Hawke Oiler. I used Kevin Hawkins' install
suggestion for the location of the button (on the top of the left switch housing,
i.e., just above the turn signals). It took me about 90 mins to install the button.
However, it looks super clean and is definitely worth the extra time. Nice idea
Kevin. The oil reservoir fits nicely in that plastic thing that sits atop the fender
under the seat. Routing the wires and tubing took some time. I located the little
pump in the tail section and secured it with the rubber strap that's already there.
>From the pump, I chose to run the tubing down and on top of the chain guard. One
tiny hole through the chain guard (behind the metal bracket for the fender) puts the
end in a good position to oil the chain. The only snag was getting the oil to flow
from the reservoir to the pump (I couldn't get oil to flow from the reservoir to the
pump, even though I could definitely hear the little pump working). After jacking
around looking for an obstruction, I decided to "manually" get the oil from the
reservoir to the pump (that sucked!). Once I got oil to the pump, everything worked
great.
I'll be extensively testing the Hawke Oiler starting tomorrow. I'm leaving
the Bay Area and headed for Mt. St. Helen's (got a hike planned there) , Hells Canyon
Nat'l Rec. Area, Glacier Nat'l Park, and some mountain biking outside of Bozeman,
Montana. On the return, we're planning on dipping down into Yellowstone and the Grand
Tetons (the back side). Just looking forward to 8 days of riding.
