Well in theory...on a conventional symmetrical wheel the center of gravity
is in the middle of the centerline of the axle. Each side of the rim is
equally close to the CofG and so neither side is preferred for adding
weights and this also gives good opportunity to correct dynamic imbalance if
needed by adding weights to either side of the CofG. With a dished wheel
like that of the GTS the CofG is actually a lot closer to the side of the
wheel where the weight is concentrated, probably fairly close to the RHS
edge (sitting on the bike) of the rim. It would make sense therefore to add
weights needed for static balance to the edge of the rim closest to the CofG
to avoid upsetting the dynamic balance. The other edge of the rim is
relatively a long way from the CofG.

Having said all that, due to their narrow section, dynamic imbalance is not
often a problem on motorcycle wheels. I have used stick on weights and as
I've discovered, it's difficult to put them anywhere but on the "wrong" side
of the rim. I tried once to put them in the center of the rim but there
isn't enough clearance to the brake caliper. Even so I've not encountered
any out-of-balance problems. If I were having balancing problems though
(especially a shimmy), I'd try the factory weights, because the particular
state of balance of my wheel may make the location of the weights more
important than on another wheel.

Cheers Joe.

I'm using stick-on weights - no problems.

Has anybody ever figured out why the front wheel is supposed to be balanced
with Yamaha weights on one side only? My shop used stick-on weights and
they seem to work fine. Has anybody had a problem with stick-on weights?
