I dont bother with wiping out the OS, rather I use utilities to optimize the registry, optimize the hard drive, and clean the registry either by hand or with reg clean programs.
Norton Systemworks is pretty good at this, but you have to do some tricks to keep it unloaded until you really need it. There is no other way to keep performance up. I have a small C: (6 gig) partition that I put Windows on, as well as the programs that install themselves into the windows registry, e.g., Netscape, ICQ, things like that. I keep my games on another partition, and I have a large second HD that I use for basic storage of things I don't use much. Every few months I back up the entire C: drive to my second HD and then wipe and start over. If I didn't monkey with my computer so much I would set up C: just the way I wanted it and then GHOST it onto D:. Then every few months I would just wipe C: and put the GHOST image back.
