sorry for not keeping current, been too busy now that I have gone back
to work.
In any case Rob, Michael G. and Michael W. are right on.
I had the same problem, which turned out to be the wire chafing where it
goes thru a hole in the ' L' bracket down into the tank. It is easily
accessible by removing plastic (both sides) to expose the gas tank. On
right side (sitting on bike) is the (smaller) flange for the fuel gauge
sending unit and left side is green connector. In order to pull out the
sender unit, you have to free the cable as it goes along the front of
the tank - bend back tabs with long screw driver. Although just removing
tank makes it easier, but not necessary.
I unsoldered the wire (red) to put new shrink tubing on as well as took
a dremel tool to smooth out the sharp edges of the hole. Be sure to use
something impervious to gas, electrical tape won't do.
I also found out later, when my gas gauge started acting up again,
another wear point at the bottom of the bracket were the (yellow?) wire
bends around a knob just before where it is soldered to the terminal
block. In any case, check both wires very carefully.

My theory is that when the tank is full, the wires are floating around,
but when down to half or less, they then ground to the bracket where the
insulation has worn thru making the gauge read full (when your not!).
Yes, easy fix and doesn't cost anything, other than some of your time.

Rob --
I recall long distance GTS rider Dave Biasotti telling me a few
months
back that his fuel gauge was acting up on him. I spoke to him later and

he said that an electrical wire was the culprit. So, given the
commonality in our bikes, I'd keep my eyes peeled for a bad wire (on the

right side of the tank, as you sit on the bike). You may want to
contact Dave directly for more info. Buena suerte bro,

Subject: Gas gauge?

My gauge is fluctuating a lot, showing empty, full and somewhere in
between
randomly...

Bad float? Seems pretty simple to replace it though, is this a common
problem or something that is rare but happens?

Easy fixes?

I'm thinking a leaky float...
