The other fact to consider is the LEO with the radar gun is typically not standing still. They are usually coming at you in their car. So you are cruising along at say 80 - 85 on that nice empty stretch of lonely road and he's going 70 - that's a closing speed of 150-155 mph. So you don't have to be doing the ton or more for RS Bob's comments to be valid in the every day world.
Last ticket I got (this past summer) was all the right conditions conspiring against me - curvy, undulating 2 lane road, doing 85, came around a bend and accelerating up a rise. (Hey it was a fun road). Just as I crested the rise my V1 beeped once and went immediately to full lock. A CHP coming the other way had crested the rise about a 1/4 mile ahead at the exact same time. Even though my instincts are highly honed (I always ride with two fingers resting on the front brake lever) and had grabbed a handful of brake at the first beep he still had me at 81. (They always want to show you their readout for some reason.) So goes to show you, even with the best, most expensive detector, it still is not going to save you sometimes. Ranges are farther than you can see and it only takes them a couple seconds to "get ya". Don't get me wrong, my V1 has saved me innumerable times and paid for itself 100 fold, just not every time. Many times it is warning me so many miles ahead I'm almost giving up on where the guy is when he finally goes buy. -- Dave Biasotti // Fremont, CA Date: Wed, 23 Jan 2002 00:32:24 EST From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Radar runs was Re: Radar Detectors Actually, A 3.5 mile straight and we were topped out for half of it. 160+ on the radar gun. What is your point? Mine is be careful. You are susceptible to radar detection farther you can see the person running the radar gun. It is dangerous to think you are safe at distances of 300 or 400 feet. For the record, you are covering about the length of a football field per second, so you don't have long to react but, the radar gun had a reading for a long time before the bike blew by, which is quite the experience too.
