Hey all,

I was doing list maintenance again this weekend, flushing out the bouncing
addresses and that sort of thing. I had been meaning to configure list
probing earlier, but never got around to it. Well, I did it just this
weekend.

What is a probe?

The list will send out a subscription probe every so often. You don't need
to do anything, just toss it. What the list is looking for is bounces. Too
many bounces, and you get unsubscribed.

The up side:

I don't have to track and manually delete bouncing addresses

The down side:

Everyone gets a probe message every now and then (on the order of months,
BTW). There could also be a unsubscription where one wasn't needed, due to
transient bounces.

What is a bounce?

A bounce is a mail message that returns to the sender (or in this case, the
list administrator) due to an inability to deliver it. This delivery
failure is most often caused by:
Mail server failure
Mail box quota exceeded (your mailbox is full)
invalid address (changed ISPs, account deleted, etc)

Any questions or concerns, feel free to ask.

Take care,
Mike
