I received this afternoon the Iran Smith Motorcycle reports which is a
bundled group of copies of old magazine articles on the Yamaha GTS1000. I
found several interesting articles that may shed some light on how the
present FJR1300 got it name and numbers.

The very first article was from a 1992 Cycle World which was based on new
Yamaha bike that was coming to the market with a Radd front end. No
pictures and just artists renderings and comments. The title of the article
and first paragraph tells all.....

"Yamaha FJR1000 Super Sports Tourer Revealed"
The artist's conception of Yamaha's planned FJR1000 shows the Radd-designed
hub-center steering, sport touring riding position and use of integrated
hard luggage.

It is interesting reading. The FJR1000 was supposed to be 120 HP and have
traction control and Ohlin electonic semi active suspension.

It was also supposed to be a $15,000 motorcycle. Yamaha questioned if they
were going to introduce it into the United States because they didn't think
this we were a sport touring market.....:>) Sounds familiar.....

Interesting reading....
