Pablo, I cannot figure out why they told you that, but I firmly believe that
is incorrect. You should check the oil while the bike is on the center
stand, and engine has been off for a few minutes. Please see the owners
manual and service manual for more info.

The oil level tends to change slightly as the engine is running. At higher
rpms, the oil level actually goes down slightly due to the amount of oil in
the top end. Of course, this depends on the motor, the temp of the engine,
oil viscosity and other factors.

Overfilling the crankcase on a wet sump engine (which almost ALL engines
are except purpose built dry sump engines in race cars) is bad, because the
crankshaft causes excessive foaming of the oil. Heavily foamed oil does not
lubricate well, causes excess wear, loss of hp/gas mileage, republicans to
mate with democrates, and other bad side effects. There is usually some
tolerance, but 1/2 to 3/4 quart too full on a GTS is probably the limit.
Very frequently on a dipstick or in the manual you will find the phrase
"never overfill !!" in bold letters. There is a reason for that....

PS: Yes, most automatic tranmissions are checked at idle, while warm, in
park, with the engine running.

Sorry theres a mistake:
"I was told I had to fill oil and check level with engine running. There
should be a minimum oil level through the window while engine running."

Dont try to fill oil with engine running. I meant just to check oil level
through the window while engine running.
Pablo.

I havent measured oil consumption.
I was told buy Yamaha official dealer that oil consumption is a normal
characteristic of this engine, which was corrected from 98s Yamaha engines.
Theyve stated that theres no engine damage until oil consump. goes to half
a liter per 1000 Km. (625 miles).

I was worried about oil consumption red lights frequent lighting.
I was told I had to fill oil and check level with engine running. There
should be a minimum oil level through the window while engine running.

It implies to overfill a bit according to manual. But thats what I did and
forgot about oil consumption's light.

Regards.
Pablo.
