About plugging that small hole: I have found a number of bikes with a very small hole drilled into the pipe. You will find that it is normally at one of the lowest points of the exhaust system, and is designed to allow water to drain out of the pipes, either from rain or from washing.
Plugging that hole will shorten the life of the pipes, unless it is stainless. Also the humiditiy generated may find its way back up the pipe, possibly causing corrosion of other parts if the bike sits for a long time. -----Original Message----- From: uranus [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 6:38 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: 'Mufflers', collectors and footpegs At 05:00 20/05/02, you wrote: > > > HELP - please guys! I looked at the input pipe where it flares out on the way into the silencer itself, and discovered a small hole in the bottom that was puffing out exhaust gases - that can't be right, I thought, so I plugged it with a self-tapper. That removed a bit of extra noise from the blow, but unsurprisingly didn't fix the rattle. Don't bother undoing the six Torx screws and removing the end-cap from the stock silencer, BTW, it's purely a cosmetic cover, the stock silencer can't be dismantled without grinding off a lot of welds. Although some of the silencer internals may be damaged, another strong possibility is that the cat or part of the collector has broken up and is now rattling around inside the silencer. Whatever the source of the rattle, the cat/collector assembly is mild steel, very exposed to road dirt/spray and surely is going to fail in normal service before the silencer does. Whilst I had the silencer off I couldn't resist starting the engine and revving it up - I was surprised to find that the throttle response was a lot crisper, as I'd presumed that the narrow downpipes and cat would be the limiting restrictions. Pleasing tone, but a few too many dBs . . In trying to find the source of the rattles I also inspected the collector assembly, and saw that it was pretty damn rusty, expecially on the the centre two pipes that are directly behind the front wheel. One day that'll need replacement so it'll be back to the old question of whether there is any chance of getting a stock part for a reasonable price, or if not, what other downpipes/collectors might fit? Nick, did you ever figure out whether your pipes were from a Thunderace or an FZR1000? The shape of the sump is quite different on those two bike, I'd guess the FZR would be more similar to the GTS as they were contemporaries. Incidentally, the stainless exit pipe from the collector is 2" O/D - nice to see an imperial measurement sneaking into a Japanese bike! This certainly will simplify fitting an aftermarket silencer, though a bit of custom pipework will still be needed between the collector exit and the silencer input. >Does anyone happen to have a right footpeg assembly available for the GTS ? If anyone has got two spare right footpegs, I'll have the second one . . not that I've checked the new price but if any UK-based listers have any spares, I'm also interested in handlebars and any plastic in the 'Green' colour (dark ocean blue), not to mention a collector/cat.
