John - at what speed are you "cruising" at 6,500 rpm? I am running a 44 tooth rear sprocket (stock is 47) and turning 90 at 6,000 (according to my GPS) and 70 at 4,600 rpm. And yes, as many of us have surmised, how the engine is broken in has a lot to do with oil consumption. My bike was initially owned by a collector in Michigan who only put 1,300 miles on it in 4 years, so I am suffering. During the Alaska rally I went through 5&1/2 quarts of oil in 10,000 miles (using Golden Spectro blend 20-50W). In talking to one of the rally participants, who runs an endurance riding camp (mostly off-road) in OR. He fits after market oil coolers to all their desert racers. As Hawke and I noted, our oil consumption is definitely related to running temps. Our bikes just have a small water jacket around the oil filter flange. Also our oil capacity is small at only 3 Qts. So Ramey said I could come up to his camp and he could fit an aftermarket oil cooler with large diameter lines that would probably add 1 quart of capacity. More oil capacity + cooling sounds good too me. Although would have to check your oil level in the sight glass with the engine running rather than off. Will let you know how that works, but probably won't be till later this year.

I use the GPS for my speedo. It runs 4 to 5 mph difference than the speedo. Maybe the difference. Although I have known GTS owners that have changed sprockets without appreciable change in oil consumption. Looks like you broke your GTS in right. hawke On 6/23/02 10:35 AM, "George C.
