Actually it is called "Duck" tape. It was developed for the army decades
ago. The army wanted a reusable water proof tape that had great properties
in tension, but was easy to rip into strips. Since its adhesion properties
were not effected by water, users used to say it repelled water "like water
off a ducks back". Since it water proof, it's great in applications where
condensation collects. Ducts are such an application.

By golly, I've never seen DUCK tape--were you, perchance, referring to
DUCT tape? the silver stuff that is pretty useless cause it dries out over
time?
