Not at all... it was smooth, but sandy, and I was only going 2-3 MPH (did I mention, I
hate riding on the dirt?)... I had the (front) brake fully engaged, yet the front
wheel was definitly moving ... kinda like 'walking' down the hill.

  Thomas,

You sure it wasn't just the desert "wash board" that gave ya that illusion
  of a shuddering feeling ; )

Actually, I've had mine on a dirt road up in 29 Palms... it was a very steep
non-maintained road. Applied the front brake only, in 1st gear, inching
down (I HATE dirt!).... the ABS did kick in, and 'stuttered' as I
  descended on down.

    Dan,

First, Take a ride down the archive trail to learn how to activate the ABS
while sitting on the center stand.

Secondly, the dirt road scenario may be influencing the ABS. I can't
remember anyone else attempting to test the ABS system on a dirt road.
  You
might want to try firmly applying the rear brake in a simulated panic mode
on a solid surface and see what happens. I recommend the rear break only,
because I haven't found the ability to truly apply the front brake hard
enough to make the bike do anything other than stop quickly.

I just purchased a 1993 GTS1000. It had only 2800 miles on it when I
purchased it. I have tried to use the ABS on dirt roads, only to find
  that
it easily locks up. When I first apply the brakes hard I can feel the abs
kicking in, and then it stops and the tires lock up. I was wondering if
this has anything to do with the fact that this bike was rarely ridden.
  If
anyone has any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Thank you,

    Dan
