I'm originally from N.Y., the Hudson Valley area, so I
know what cold is and that most of you out there have
put your baby to sleep for a long winter ahead.
I now live in FL. and down here our best of the riding
season is now just beginning. Tomorrow morning I'm
riding with a new friend whom has a 03 FJR1300. The
temp. at takeoff will be 47/48 degrees. That's cold
for
these parts. Here's my question. Assuming you have
the correct factory reccomended oil in your engine
at the ambient temps. your riding in, how long in
terms of miles do you need to ride at a low rpm
before the engine is at proper coolant and oil temp.
The lack of a temp. gauge on the GTS has always been
a sore spot for me, as it is the only liquid cooled
motorcycle I have ever owned without one. I keep
telling myself that a temp. guage will replace the
gas guage some day, but have never got around to it.
At what rpm is safe to ride a cold engine after
start up? Should revs be kept below 4-3000rpms
while riding initially for how many miles before
high rpms can be used? The reason I ask is that our
ride starts out on the interstate for 26 miles before
we exit for country roads. The problem is traffic
on the interstate is moving 70-80mph and to go
slower is hazardess. Am I harming the engine at
4,500-5,500 rpms just to keep up with traffic when
engine is cold. Again without a temp. gauge, it's
hard to figure when your engine is warm enough to
run at high rpms. Has anyone else on the list thought
of this potential problem, or am I just overly
concerned about premature wear on the engine at cold
start up temps? Thanks for your time.
-Pete
