Thanks to Matt Atwood on the details of the Kirksite Welding Rod.

I can't say enough good things about JB Weld. In my teens I apprenticed at
a machine shop where I watched a machinist repair a cracked block with the
stuff. It wasn't in a particularly critical location, but it was a big
crack. I've used it to build up cracked side covers (It'll even take
threads!), and a foot peg bracket(not a critical location mind you) on
motorcycles. If the metal is reasonably well prepped, this stuff is
nothing short of amazing.

However, given that a passenger is likely to be the one inducing the
breaking load on the rail, you have to ask yourself; "what is this thing
going to do if it fails?" If it's not going to dump your "precious cargo"
on their head, then buy yourself a tube of JB-weld and some touch-up paint.
Otherwise keep looking for a qualified welder and propose the Kirksite
Rod.

BTW, (I forget the color -- sorry) I found that my wife had a nail-polish
that matched my GTS-red perfectly. It was easy to use dried quickly.
