If by free you mean under the GPL, I can't help you, as I don't know any good quality GPL fonts from a typographic point of view -- the GPL is inappropriate for fonts. However, the nerest thing is probably the Open Font Licence (or License in the US), and SIL just released Charis, Doulos and Gentium under the OFL -- see http://scripts.sil.org/CharisSILfont for example. These cover all of what is needed for most Latin and Cyrillic writing systems, plus IPA; Gentium includes Greek. There's also Bitstream Vera, of course, which was explicitly released for the Gnome desktop. None of these support Chinese/Korean/Japanese.
