GUADEC, Day 2

July 29, The Hague - GUADEC was in full swing today as 20 session speakers
and various discussion groups presented throughout the day. Many morning
sessions delved into technical detail. Rob Bradford's 5 things every GNOME
hacker should know was a success (and he even had 6 tips to share!), and
John Palmieri reinforced keynote thoughts from yesterday with his talk The
future is JavaScript. The Google Summer of Code Student Lightning Talks drew
an energetic crowd, and Stormy Peters gave us advice on GNOME Foundation:
Getting things done.

After lunch, technologist and digital rights advocate Danny O'Brien
delivered his keynote speech entitled Where you don't want to be: How a free
desktop can help (and hinder) free speech across the world. Mr O'Brien
called the desktop "the heart of trust" at the center of the user's control,
and said that it must be protected. After describing the threat from
state-level and organized crime regimes, he gave examples of how technology
is being use to track, spy on and censor citizens around the world. Mr
O'Brien said that in the future these problems will become more prevalent as
they trickle down in level and scale, but that simple, ubiquitous encryption
is "low hanging fruit".

The afternoon also saw talks on mobile operating systems and the upcoming
GNOME 3, as well as a session by Thorsten Sick on Malware threats to a Linux
desktop. The GNOME Foundation Annual General Meeting (AGM) finished the day,
with an introduction of newly elected Board
Members<http://mail.gnome.org/archives/foundation-announce/2010-June/msg00004.html>and
updates from committee leaders on the state of Foundation activities.

Don't forget about the Collabora Beach BBQ Party, tonight at 19:00 at the
Beach Company. Map
